FORESEA: Foreseeing the future of sustainability through natural innovative and conceptual waste materials.

Foresea is inspired by the challenges the world faces in terms of the issue of plastic pollution within our oceans.

The layers of waste, plastic and pollution in the ocean are conceptually represented through the textural placements of the Foresea collection. Garments with elements that are figure-hugging or that touch the skin are mainly constructed from the soft, pliable seaweed yarn - this contrasts against the outer garments and pieces that are primarily made from petroleum-derived yarn. This symbolises my take on the issue of ocean waste; peeling back each layer of pollution to reveal the beautiful, natural underbelly of seaweed and organic material concealed by and tangled within the man-made waste.

Foresea explores a new medium of bioplastic made from ocean algae, an alternative to plastic. The bioplastics that I have used in this project symbolise the plastic waste polluting the oceans but are conversely made from an innovative, biodegradable material created with algae, water and glycerine.  Bioplastics have the same functionality and more as non-biodegradable plastic but are derived from sustainable, natural resources.

The whole collection demonstrates the design concept of ‘cyclability’. This uses thesustainable “design for disassembly” and “monomateriality" approaches. As a result, each section of each garment can be cut up, disassembled and recycled separately and easily to minimise waste.
